Can Online Chemistry Tutoring Really Help You Pass Your Exams?

Skepticism here is fair. Chemistry is a subject where students either get it or visibly don’t, and a screen between the tutor and the work feels like it should make that worse, not better.

In practice, what actually determines whether tutoring works has almost nothing to do with online versus in-person, and everything to do with whether the tutoring is diagnosing the real problem.

What “working” actually looks like

The honest answer is that tutoring doesn’t work by osmosis — a student doesn’t improve just by sitting through sessions. It works when the sessions target the specific gap causing the grade to be lower than the effort put in, which is a different thing for almost every student. Sometimes it’s a foundational misconception from an earlier unit. Sometimes it’s test-taking mechanics under time pressure. Sometimes the student understands everything and just can’t yet explain it under exam conditions.

Good online tutoring finds that gap the same way good in-person tutoring does: by watching the student work through a problem, not by re-lecturing the chapter.

What actually predicts a bad outcome

The tutoring that doesn’t work is almost always the same pattern: a tutor who reviews content the student already sort of knows, without ever finding out why it’s not translating to the test. That failure mode exists in person just as much as online — it’s not a format problem, it’s a diagnosis problem.

A realistic read on how to think about progress

Progress rarely shows up as an immediate grade jump on the very next test. The earlier signal is usually the student being able to explain a concept out loud, unprompted, without looking at notes — that’s the thing that predicts the grade improvement that follows a few weeks later, not the other way around.

If a student went from failing to passing before, it’s worth reading how that actually happened: How to Go From Failing to Passing Gen Chem walks through what that recovery process looks like in practice.

How I make sure it’s working for your student specifically

Every engagement starts with a free Chemistry Check-In precisely because I want to know, before anyone commits to anything, whether I’m the right fit for what’s actually going on. If we move forward, we set a specific, measurable target — not “get better at chemistry,” but a real benchmark tied to the next exam or the semester ahead.
