A failing midterm grade doesn’t mean you can’t pass General Chemistry. I’ve watched students come back from a 48% on the first exam to finish the semester with a B. It happens — but only when students figure out what actually went wrong and change what they’re doing, not just do more of it.
Here’s the approach that actually works.
Step 1: Understand the math before you panic
Before you assume the semester is over, look at the syllabus. Most Gen Chem courses have grade structures that make recovery possible:
- Some professors drop the lowest exam grade
- Lab grades are typically separate and not affected by your exam performance
- Homework and participation points are often easy to recover
- A final exam that covers everything is usually worth 20–30% — meaning a strong final can move your grade significantly
Calculate what grade you need on the remaining exams to pass. Most students haven’t done this math, and when they do, they find the situation is more recoverable than it felt on the day they got the score back.
Step 2: Diagnose what actually went wrong
This is the step most students skip. Instead of diagnosing, they study more. More hours, more notes, more YouTube videos. And they fail the next exam too, because they’re studying harder without studying differently.
There are three distinct causes of failing a Gen Chem exam, and each one has a different fix:
Foundation gap. You’re missing a prerequisite concept — stoichiometry, dimensional analysis, significant figures — that every new topic is built on. No amount of reviewing current material fixes a foundation gap. You have to go back and close it specifically.
Study method mismatch. You studied hard but prepared for the wrong kind of exam. You can solve the practice problems with your notes open. You read the chapter three times. But the exam asks you to apply concepts to situations you’ve never seen. Recognition isn’t recall.
Time and execution issues. You understand the material but freeze up on exams, run out of time, or make consistent arithmetic errors under pressure. This is a different problem with a different solution.
The students who recover aren’t the ones who studied harder. They’re the ones who figured out what was actually wrong.
Step 3: Change what you’re doing, not just how much
Once you’ve diagnosed the type of problem, the fix becomes specific.
If it’s a foundation gap: Identify the specific concept that’s missing. One focused session on stoichiometry or limiting reagents is worth more than three weeks of general review. Don’t review everything — fix the thing that’s breaking everything else.
If it’s a study method mismatch: Stop re-reading and start working problems. Specifically: problems you’ve never seen, timed, without your notes. The only way to build exam-ready fluency is to practice exam conditions. Everything else builds familiarity. Familiarity isn’t enough.
If it’s time and execution: Practice under timed conditions every single study session. Build a consistent order of operations for each problem type so you’re not improvising under pressure. Learn which problem types cost you the most time and address those first.
Step 4: Know when to get help
Tutoring is most effective in one specific situation: when a student knows something is wrong but can’t identify what. A tutor can ask the right diagnostic questions, find the gap in about 30 minutes, and give you targeted work that a general study session never would.
It’s least effective when a student comes in expecting the tutor to re-teach the entire course the week before finals. That’s not enough time, and it’s not how chemistry sticks.
If you’re going to ask for help, do it early in the recovery process — not as a last resort. The students I’ve seen make the biggest turnarounds came to their first session with seven weeks left in the semester, not seven days.
