The AP Chemistry FRQ section is 50% of your score. That means half of your exam is seven open-ended questions where you write out your reasoning — and where the grader awards or withholds points based on exactly what you say.
Most students understand that the FRQ section is hard. What they don’t understand is why they’re losing points. And that’s a completely different problem.
What the FRQ section actually tests
The free-response section isn’t a harder version of the multiple-choice. It tests something entirely different. There are seven questions — three long, four short — and each one falls into a predictable type.

Every question on the FRQ section is a variation of one of these five types. Once a student can recognize which type they’re looking at, they know what structure their answer needs.
The five ways most students lose points
In 10 years grading these responses, the same five patterns come up again and again.
1. They explain what, not why
“The reaction shifts to the right.” That’s a prediction, not an explanation. The rubric awards the point for: “The reaction shifts to the right because removing a product decreases the concentration of products, so the system proceeds forward to reestablish equilibrium.” Almost the same idea. Completely different score.
2. They skip the connecting claim
Students know Le Chatelier’s Principle. They know the answer. But they jump straight from “the stress is applied” to “the system shifts left” without naming the principle or explaining the mechanism. The rubric wants the middle step. They leave it out every time.
3. They write too vaguely
“The atoms are closer together” when the rubric requires “the molecules experience stronger London dispersion forces due to increased surface area.” Chemistry has specific vocabulary for a reason. Using general language — even when the understanding is correct — costs points.
4. They run out of time on the long FRQs
Long FRQs are multi-part, and many students spend 20+ minutes on the first one and rush the last two. The math: 105 minutes for 3 long + 4 short means roughly 15 minutes per long question and 9 minutes per short. Students who don’t manage this actively always run short at the end — which is where the hardest questions live.
5. They leave the justification blank when they’re unsure
If you don’t know the right answer, write what you do know. The College Board’s scoring guidelines award points for correct reasoning even when the final prediction is wrong. Partial credit is real. Blank space is not.
The College Board doesn’t grade chemistry. It grades reasoning.
What the rubric is actually looking for
Every FRQ point follows one of three patterns. Once a student internalizes these, their answers start hitting the rubric almost automatically.
Claim + Reasoning: “[X happens] because [Y].” The claim and the reason must both be present. One without the other doesn’t earn the point.
Principle + Application: “[Named principle] predicts [outcome] because [mechanism].” The principle must be named. The mechanism must connect the principle to this specific situation.
Evidence + Interpretation: “The data shows [observation], which indicates [interpretation] because [reasoning].” Description alone is not interpretation. The “because” is mandatory.
If a student’s FRQ answers don’t follow one of those patterns, they’re losing points on responses where they actually know the chemistry. That’s the most fixable problem in AP Chemistry prep.
