How AP Chemistry FRQs Are Actually Scored

Most AP Chemistry students have never actually read a College Board scoring guideline. They write FRQ responses based on what feels right — and then lose points they didn’t know were available.

Understanding how the rubric works doesn’t just tell you what to write. It tells you how much to write, what to include, and — critically — what earns a point versus what earns nothing even when the underlying chemistry is correct.

How the points are structured

Each AP Chemistry FRQ question is broken into labeled parts — (a), (b), (c), and so on. Each part has a specific point value. Long FRQs typically have 10 points spread across 4–6 parts. Short FRQs have 4 points across 2–3 parts.

Within each part, the scoring guideline lists exactly what earns the point. It’s not about holistic quality — a beautifully written but incomplete response earns the same score as a brief correct one. The point is awarded for the specific claim, calculation, or reasoning the rubric specifies.

The three scoring structures you’ll see

Point for prediction + point for justification (most common)

Many FRQ parts award two separate points: one for the correct prediction or answer, and one for the correct justification. These are independent. A correct prediction with no justification earns one point. A correct justification with a wrong prediction may still earn one point if the reasoning is internally consistent.

This is important. Students who give up on a question after getting stuck on the prediction are leaving the justification point on the table — and it’s often easier to earn than the prediction itself.

Single point for a specific claim

Some parts have one point for one specific statement. The rubric lists acceptable phrases or equivalent chemistry. Vague language — “the particles move more” instead of “the average kinetic energy of the molecules increases” — typically does not earn this point even if the student clearly understands the concept. Precision is required.

Calculation points with error carry-forward

For multi-part calculations, the College Board applies “error carry-forward” — if you make an error in part (a) that carries into part (b), you can still earn full credit on part (b) if your method is correct. Graders evaluate the method, not just the numerical answer. Showing your work clearly is not optional — it’s how you protect points when arithmetic errors occur.

You can get a calculation wrong and still earn every subsequent point — if your method is visible and correct.

What this means for how you write

Always separate your prediction from your justification. Write the prediction first, then explain why using a named principle and specific mechanism. Two sentences minimum for any explain/justify part.

Use chemical vocabulary precisely. “Stronger bonds” is vague. “Greater bond dissociation energy due to increased nuclear charge” is specific. When a concept has a name in chemistry, use that name.

Show every calculation step. Write the setup, the substitution, and the answer with units. If you make an arithmetic error mid-calculation, showing your method protects every downstream point.

Don’t leave parts blank. If you’re unsure of the correct prediction, write what you do know about the chemistry involved. Partial credit is awarded for correct reasoning even when the conclusion is wrong. A blank earns nothing; an attempt earns something.

One thing I tell every student

The single highest-return activity in AP Chemistry exam prep is reading the scoring guidelines for released FRQs after you’ve written your own response. Not before. Not instead of. After.

When you compare your answer to the rubric point by point — identifying which specific claim you included, which you missed, and what exact language would have earned the point — you’re building the scoring pattern into your thinking. Students who do this consistently stop losing points to imprecision. And on the AP Chemistry FRQ, imprecision is where most of the points go.
