Here’s what most Gen Chem students do before an exam: re-read their notes, watch YouTube videos of the lecture, go back through the homework, and maybe make some flashcards. It feels like studying. It looks like studying. And it often doesn’t work.
The problem isn’t effort. It’s that these activities build familiarity — and familiarity isn’t what a Gen Chem exam tests.
What familiarity looks like vs. what the exam asks for
Familiarity means you recognize a concept when you see it. You know what Le Chatelier’s Principle is. You’ve seen a stoichiometry problem before. You understand what a buffer does.
What Gen Chem exams actually test is whether you can apply a concept to a problem you’ve never seen before, in 3–4 minutes, without your notes. That requires retrieval and application under pressure — not recognition.
Re-reading builds recognition. Working unfamiliar problems under time pressure builds what the exam actually rewards.
What actually works
Work problems you haven’t seen — not the ones you have
Homework problems and worked examples train you to recognize patterns. They’re useful for learning a concept initially. They’re not useful as exam preparation because you already know how they end.
Find practice problems from other sources — old exams if your professor provides them, problems from the end of the chapter that weren’t assigned, problems from a different textbook. The unfamiliarity is the point. The exam won’t look like your homework.
Do it timed
Gen Chem exams are almost always time-constrained. If you’ve only ever solved problems with unlimited time, you haven’t practiced the actual skill the exam tests. Build timing into every practice session. Know how many minutes you have per problem and stick to it.
Do it without your notes
This one is uncomfortable, which is exactly why it works. Closing your notes and working a problem forces your brain to retrieve instead of recognize. Retrieval practice is one of the most well-studied and reliable methods for improving exam performance. Passive review — reading, highlighting, re-copying — is not.
If you can only solve the problem with your notes open, you’re not ready for the exam.
Use your mistakes as a study guide
When you get a practice problem wrong, resist the urge to find the right answer and move on. Instead, identify exactly where your reasoning diverged from correct. Was it the setup? The wrong formula? A conceptual error about what the question was asking? The error is the study material. The correct answer is just the destination.
The 72-hour pre-exam schedule
72 hours out: Identify your three weakest topics based on your practice performance. Spend focused time on those — not reviewing what you already know.
48 hours out: Work a full practice set under exam conditions. Timed, no notes, no interruptions. Review every wrong answer in detail.
24 hours out: Light review only. Re-read the key formulas and constants you’ll need. Do a few warm-up problems. Don’t start new material.
Night before: Stop studying by 9 PM. Sleep matters for exam performance more than another hour of notes. This is not a motivational statement — it’s what the research on memory consolidation actually shows.
One thing I tell every student
There is no substitute for working problems. Not videos, not notes, not re-reading the chapter. The students who do well on Gen Chem exams have spent most of their study time with a blank piece of paper working through problems they haven’t seen before.
It’s harder than reviewing. It’s supposed to be. The discomfort of not knowing is the thing that makes the knowledge stick.
