Let me say the uncomfortable thing first: failing a chemistry midterm doesn’t mean you’re bad at chemistry. It means something specific went wrong — and that specific thing is fixable. But only if you figure out what it actually was.
Most students don’t do that. They either spiral into panic or vow to “study harder” without changing anything about how they study. Neither works.
The wrong responses (what most students do)
- Vow to study harder. “Study harder” isn’t a plan. It’s a feeling. Without changing the approach, more time on the same strategy produces the same results.
- Re-read all your notes from the beginning. This feels productive. It isn’t. Passive re-reading is how you prepared for the midterm you just failed.
- Avoid thinking about it and hope the final covers different material. It won’t. The final almost always builds on what the midterm tested.
The right first step: a post-mortem
Get your exam back. Sit down with it and go through it question by question. For each wrong answer, figure out why you got it wrong. There are four different reasons, and they require four different fixes:
1. “I didn’t know the concept.”
This is a content gap. The fix is to go back to that specific topic and actually learn it — not skim it, not re-read the textbook, but work through it until you can explain it out loud without notes. Then work problems from that topic until it feels automatic.
2. “I knew the concept but set up the problem wrong.”
This is an application gap. You understand the idea in isolation but can’t translate it into a chemistry problem. The fix is more practice problems from that specific topic — not content review, but problem-solving practice. The understanding is there; it just hasn’t connected to execution yet.
3. “I made calculation errors.”
This is an execution gap. You rush, skip steps, or do math in your head when you should write it out. The fix is to slow down and write every step separately, even when it feels unnecessary. One skipped step is where most arithmetic errors live.
4. “I ran out of time.”
This is a pacing gap. You know the material but can’t get through the exam fast enough. The fix is timed practice under exam conditions — not practice at your own pace, but practice with a clock running. You need to know which question types take you longer so you can budget time accordingly.
These are four completely different problems. Treating them all as “I need to study more” is why most recovery plans don’t work.
What to do with the rest of the semester
Find out how much the midterm is worth. Many gen chem courses weight the final exam at 35–40% of the grade. One bad midterm is often mathematically recoverable if you perform well on everything else. Know your actual numbers before you assume the worst.
Talk to your professor. Not to plead for points — to understand specifically where you lost them. Ask: “What would a full-credit answer to this question have looked like?” Most professors will tell you. That information is worth more than any study guide.
Make a concrete plan for the next four weeks. Not “study more.” Specific topics, specific days, specific problem sets. Write it down. A plan that exists only in your head isn’t a plan.
When to get outside help
If you’ve done the post-mortem and still can’t identify why you got things wrong — if you look at your incorrect answers and genuinely don’t understand where your reasoning went off — that’s the signal that solo studying isn’t enough.
The most valuable thing a tutor can do in this situation isn’t explain the content. It’s ask you to talk through your reasoning out loud. In my experience, a single conversation where a student explains how they approached a problem tells me more about what’s going wrong than three sessions of content review. The gap is almost always in the reasoning, not the knowledge.
One targeted session the week after a bad midterm — before the next unit builds on top of what you didn’t understand — is worth more than four sessions in the week before the final.
